Keen to discover the finest beaches of Valparaiso? Join us along Chile's coastline! From wild coves, family beaches to world-class surf spots: discover the playas you simply cannot miss in this vibrant city and its namesake region.

Playa Las Torpederas

The playa Las Torpederas sits at the foot of the Playa Ancha hillside – an iconic spot in the city, where you can admire Victorian-style homes and take in splendid views across the Pacific.

Once known as the playa de los Pescadores (fishermen's beach), it was later renamed playa Las Torpederas in reference to two torpedo boats (vessels for the Chilean navy) that were built at Valparaiso and anchored in the bay.

A vacation destination since the early 1900s, this beach – sheltered from the wind by the hillside – is perfect for swimming and particularly beloved by local families.

Practical information

Address: Altamirano 22100, Valparaíso, Chili

Activities: just five minutes' drive from the beach stands the Mirador Faro Punta Angeles lighthouse, renowned for its stunning panoramic views. Note that the area is known for petty theft. While visiting the lighthouse, stay vigilant (and lock your car).

Playa Carvallo

A five-minute walk north of playa Las Torpederas, you'll discover Carvallo Beach. Nestled between the Rubén Darao and Carvallo promenades, this unspoiled cove is bordered by rocks, making it ideal for picnicking with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop – though swimming here is not advisable.

Tip: half sandy, half rocky, this site requires wearing sandals or water shoes.

Playa San Mateo

Valparaíso: exploring the finest beaches on Chile's central coast
San Mateo Beach is located 7 km (roughly a 25-minute walk) from playa Carvallo. Built artificially in the late 1960s as part of the city's expansion, this modest beach resort is equipped with showers, changing rooms, and small kiosks (selling snacks and refreshments). The beach itself is compact, as much of the shoreline here is occupied by the port.

Practical information

Address: Altamirano 1480, Valparaíso, Chili

Worth knowing: located near Valparaiso's naval shipyard, the beach is occasionally used by the Chilean Navy for troop landing exercises.

Playa Caleta Portales

Las Dunas de Concón (and playa Cochoa)

Not quite a beach, Concón's dunes nonetheless remain a natural attraction linked to the ocean, as they descend directly into its deep waters!

Easily accessible from Valparaiso's city center (via bus lines 602 and 605), this site lets you admire the sunset while enjoying sandboarding!

Climbing the dunes takes roughly 30 minutes to reach the summit (at about 100 meters altitude). The duration can be shorter, but bear in mind the ascent is fairly demanding, thanks to the sandy terrain requiring greater physical exertion.

For some relaxation after climbing, head to playa Cochoa (a small cove just a 10-minute drive from the dunes).

Going further: 3 things to know about Valparaíso

1/ It's important to know that Valparaíso designates both a region – situated between the Coquimbo region (to the north) and the Santiago metropolitan region (to the south) – and a small port city, itself located in the center of the namesake region.

2/ Due to its historic past (the city was once home to a fishing people called the changos) and the passage of the Humboldt Current (known for its abundance of fish): Valparaiso is a major maritime port. Today, its port activities remain among Chili's most important.

3/ The city's historic quarter is inscribed on the World Heritage List because it "offers an extraordinary example of industrial-era heritage, linked to late 19th and 20th-century international maritime commerce," according to UNESCO!

When to swim in Valparaíso?

Though Valparaíso boasts stunning beaches, note that water temperatures are never particularly warm (around 18°C during summer).

There are two reasons for this. First, the region borders the Pacific Ocean. Second, its marine waters are subject to the Humboldt Current – a marine current originating near Antarctica, bringing lower-than-normal temperatures to Chile's coast.
