From the Wulff Castle to Quinta Vergara, passing through the Palacio Rioja and the Flower Clock: here's what to see and what to do in Viña del Mar...
What to See and Do in Viña del Mar?
Located 120 km northwest of Santiago, the city of Viña del Mar stretches along the coastline, facing the Pacific Ocean. Founded in the 19th century under the impetus of an aristocratic family, this charming coastal town is prized for its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
A major international resort destination in the 1870s, Viña del Mar retains architectural influences from that era—European styles (Art Deco, Tudor, etc.)—visible in several landmark buildings.
Stroll Through Plaza Vergara
During your visit, linger at Plaza José Francisco Vergara. Beyond being THE heart of Viña del Mar, this square allows you to admire the superb municipal theater (built in 1930), as well as houses with colonial architecture. Located just steps from the church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, the plaza Vergara hosts a municipal orchestra every Sunday evening.
Visit the Presidential Palace of Cerro Castillo
The Palacio Presidencial de Cerro Castillo is a magnificent edifice that can be visited (by reservation only). Accompanied by a guide, you'll learn everything about the palace's interior and its numerous rooms. Its highlight? The stunning panoramic view over the bay—where you can also glimpse the city of Valparaíso.
Visit Wulff Castle
Another unmissable monument? The castillo Wulff! Built in the 20th century (and designated a Historical Monument in 1995), the castle has seen its functions evolve over the decades.
After serving as a maritime museum, the castle now hosts cultural exhibitions. You can admire antique furnishings, stained glass windows and a magnificent panoramic view. Open daily (free admission).
Visit the Palacio Rioja and the Museum of Decorative Arts
Erected in 1907 (at the request of businessman Fernando Rioja Medel), the Palacio Rioja is renowned for its Belle Époque architecture, with French and Spanish influences. Since 1979, this historic building has housed Viña del Mar's Museum of Decorative Arts.
Inside? You can admire over 300 decorative pieces from Chilean aristocracy of the early 20th century (particularly objects that belonged to the Rioja family).
See the Flower Clock
Another must-see spot in Viña del Mar? The Flower Clock! This botanical artwork (created in 1962) represents an immense clock composed of colorful flowers.
Thanks to an electronic mechanism (now linked to a satellite system), El Reloj de Flores tells time with precision. A fun fact? The Flower Clock was inaugurated in 1962 during the FIFA World Cup, which was held in Chili that year.
Dine at Brunet Castle
Located 750 meters from the clock (at 104 Iberia Street), you'll find the Castillo Brunet. Built in 1923, this castle (named after a French family) is renowned for its tower adorned with stained glass windows and its ornate arabesque architecture…
To have the chance to admire it? You must dine at the restaurant occupying the premises, as the building is no longer open for tours… Fortunately, the dishes are as exquisite as the beauty of the surroundings.
Explore Quinta Vergara
Considered one of the city's most beautiful parks, Quinta Vergara deserves a lingering visit! Designed in 1910, the grounds feature a Gothic palace and an amphitheater. The park was designed by Doña Dolores Pérez de Álvarez—the wife of Francisco Alvares (owner of the Viña valley).
The park's subtropical plants were imported by their son, then a great traveler. If you visit the city in February, don't miss the Viña del Mar International Song Festival (held there since 1960!).
